A proper calculation breaks this total down into years, months, weeks, and remaining days to provide a clearer perspective of the time span. If a calculation starts on a future date and ends on a date in the past, the mathematical formula naturally outputs a negative duration value, indicating that the chronological order is reversed. This level of precision is widely used in contract negotiations, project management, and tracking the exact time passed since historical milestones.

Beyond finding the difference between two points in time, another common mathematical operation is date manipulation, which involves adding or subtracting a specific amount of time from a known starting date. This is frequently used to determine future deadlines, expiration dates, or past historical milestones. Adding ninety days or six months to a date requires a system that understands month boundaries. For instance, adding one month to January 31 does not result in February 31, as that date does not exist. The standard mathematical calendar rule shifts the result to the closest valid day, typically the last day of February.
